LETTERKENNY, Co. Donegal, Ireland — July 5, 2026 – Tributes are pouring in for Tadhg Callaghan Carter, the 15-year-old boy who died after being struck by a competing rally car during the Donegal International Rally on Saturday, prompting the cancellation of the remainder of one of Ireland’s most prestigious motorsport events.

The fatal incident occurred shortly before 5:00 p.m. local time on Special Stage 12 (Gartan) at Location 15 in Trentagh, near Kilmacrennan, County Donegal. According to An Garda Síochána, the collision involved a participating vehicle in the rally.

Emergency services responded immediately, and Tadhg was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite medical efforts. Two other spectators injured in the incident were also transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, organizers of the Donegal International Rally announced the cancellation of the remainder of the three-day event as a mark of respect for Tadhg, his family, and everyone affected by the incident.

Tadhg had recently completed his Junior Certificate examinations at St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny and was preparing to begin his fifth year of secondary school in September. Friends, classmates, and members of the local community have remembered him as a kind, respectful, and much-loved young man whose death has left the community in deep shock.

An Garda Síochána has launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision in conjunction with Motorsport Ireland. Investigators are appealing to anyone who was present at Location 15 on Special Stage 12 (Gartan), particularly those with mobile phone, GoPro, or dashcam footage, to contact Gardaí as they work to establish exactly what happened.

The tragedy marks the first spectator fatality at the Donegal International Rally since the event began, adding to a difficult chapter in Irish motorsport history. The rally previously suffered the loss of three-time champion Manus Kelly, who died during the 2019 event after his car crashed during a competitive stage. In 2008, an 18-year-old spectator died after a rally car left the road, leading to the cancellation of the remainder of that year’s event, while two marshals were killed during the rally in 2002. The last spectator fatalities at a Motorsport Ireland-sanctioned event occurred during the Cavan Stages Rally in 2012, when two spectators lost their lives.

As investigations continue, tributes continue to be shared across County Donegal and the wider Irish motorsport community, with many expressing condolences to Tadhg Callaghan Carter’s family and friends while reflecting on the profound loss felt throughout the region.

Authorities have asked the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators to complete a full examination of the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Further updates are expected as the joint Garda and Motorsport Ireland investigation progresses.
