The Geneva community is mourning the tragic loss of Mary Wilbur, a 71-year-old resident who was killed in a devastating head-on collision over the Independence Day weekend in Geneva, Illinois. The fatal crash, which occurred on Saturday, July 4, 2026, has left family members, friends, and neighbors grieving while authorities continue pursuing criminal charges against the other driver involved.

According to the Kane County Coroner’s Office, Mary Wilbur was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision on the 1000 block of South Randall Road. The coroner later identified her as the victim and determined that her preliminary cause of death was injuries consistent with a motor vehicle crash.

Geneva Police reported that the crash occurred at approximately 8:13 p.m. when a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, traveling northbound on Randall Road, allegedly crossed the double yellow centerline into oncoming traffic and struck Wilbur’s 2019 Nissan Versa head-on. The violent impact caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles and prompted a large emergency response from police, firefighters, and paramedics.

Also inside Wilbur’s vehicle was her 26-year-old son, who sustained life-threatening injuries. He was initially transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital before being airlifted to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago, where he continues receiving treatment.

Investigators identified the other driver as Christian Mares, 40, of Aurora. Following the investigation, Geneva Police announced numerous charges against Mares, including reckless homicide, multiple counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing death, aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm, aggravated use of a communication device causing death, and additional DUI and traffic-related offenses. After receiving medical treatment for his own injuries, Mares was released from the hospital and taken into custody at the Kane County Jail.

As news of Mary Wilbur’s passing spread throughout Geneva, expressions of sympathy poured in from members of the community.
