The Theresa, Wisconsin, community is mourning the loss of Joel Bernhard, the beloved owner of Confections By Joel, whose life was marked by determination, kindness, and an extraordinary commitment to bringing happiness to others. Bernhard, 47, passed away on June 30, 2026, at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, surrounded by his family.

Joel Bernhardโ€™s story was one of perseverance and inspiration. Born on November 8, 1978, to Ron and Karen (Zedler) Bernhard, he faced significant challenges early in life after developing a brain tumor as a young child. Following multiple surgeries, Joel lost his sight, but he refused to allow blindness to define his future. Instead, he built a life centered around independence, faith, creativity, and helping others.

After completing his education, Joel earned a Culinary Arts degree from Moraine Park Technical College and transformed his passion for baking and chocolate-making into a successful business. He founded Confections For Any Occasion, later known as Confections By Joel, in Theresa in 2001. His shop became much more than a place to buy chocolates and sweets; it became a gathering place where customers formed connections and created lasting memories.

Customers and community members remembered Joel for his warm personality, remarkable optimism, and ability to make people feel welcome. Despite being blind and experiencing serious health challenges throughout his life, including numerous medical procedures and organ transplants, he continued to focus on serving others and maintaining close relationships with his customers, employees, friends, and family.

Joelโ€™s dedication to his business was especially evident after a devastating fire damaged his Theresa shop in 2024. With support from employees, customers, and the surrounding community, the business was rebuilt and reopened, allowing Joel to continue sharing the creations and experiences that had become part of the townโ€™s identity.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joel was remembered as a man of deep faith and compassion. A lifelong member of St. Peterโ€™s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, he was known for his humility, generosity, and positive outlook. Those who knew him often described his greatest gift as his ability to see the good in life and encourage others through his own example.

Joel Bernhard is survived by his mother, Karen; his brother Mike and sister-in-law Tammy; his nieces Samantha and Sabrina; extended family members; friends; employees; loyal customers; and countless people whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald, his sister Angela, and other family members.

A Christian funeral service for Joel Bernhard is scheduled at St. Peterโ€™s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, with visitation and burial arrangements announced by his family.

The legacy of Joel Bernhard extends far beyond the chocolates and treats he created. Through courage, faith, and an unwavering desire to bring joy to others, he became a symbol of resilience in Theresa and beyond. His memory will continue through the many lives he influenced and the community that will forever remember him.
