The Western Cape community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michelé Lombard, a beloved resident of the Eljada Aftercare Centre in Oudtshoorn, who was among five people killed in a devastating head-on collision on the N2 near Heidelberg in South Africa’s Garden Route. The tragic crash also claimed the lives of four members of the same family traveling in a sport utility vehicle, leaving communities across the region united in grief.
The collision occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, when a Toyota minibus and an SUV collided head-on on the N2 outside Heidelberg. According to police, Michelé Lombard, 34, was traveling in the minibus at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Ten other occupants of the minibus sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police have opened a culpable homicide investigation as they continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
Authorities confirmed that the occupants of the SUV were a family of four consisting of a father, mother, and their two sons. The parents died at the scene, while their 13-year-old and 20-year-old sons were taken to hospital with critical injuries. Despite extensive medical treatment, the younger son died later that evening and his older brother succumbed to his injuries the following morning, bringing the total death toll to five.
