RALEIGH, N.C. — An overnight altercation in Raleigh’s Glenwood South entertainment district escalated into gunfire early Saturday, leaving two people injured and resulting in the arrest of the alleged shooter, according to the Raleigh Police Department. The incident unfolded in one of the city’s busiest nightlife areas, prompting a large police response and a temporary closure of part of Glenwood Avenue while investigators processed the scene.
Police said officers were dispatched at approximately 1:45 a.m. to the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and West Jones Street following reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that investigators described as non-life-threatening.
According to investigators, the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two men. Police said one of the men allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the other during the dispute. The woman who was struck by gunfire was an uninvolved bystander caught in the crossfire. Authorities emphasized that the shooting did not occur inside any business, despite the incident taking place in the heart of the city’s nightlife district.
The suspected shooter, 30-year-old Nashon Ramsey, was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. He has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, carrying a concealed weapon, and discharging a firearm within city limits. He is being held without bond pending his initial court appearance.
Police also charged the man who sustained gunshot injuries with simple assault, stating that the investigation determined the shooting followed a physical confrontation between the two men. Detectives have not released additional information regarding what led to the fight or whether the individuals knew each other before the incident.
Following the shooting, officers secured the intersection while crime scene investigators documented evidence, recovered shell casings, and interviewed witnesses. Detectives are also reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and entertainment venues as they continue to reconstruct the sequence of events. The investigation remains active, although police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and have not indicated any ongoing threat to the public.
The latest shooting adds to a series of violent incidents that have occurred in the Glenwood South district in recent years, prompting renewed concerns among residents and business owners about late-night safety in the popular entertainment corridor. Raleigh police have maintained an increased presence in the area during peak nightlife hours while continuing efforts to reduce violent crime.
