A wildfire broke out today on the Greek island of Rhodes, prompting a large-scale emergency response as firefighters worked to contain flames spreading through dry scrubland in a mountainous region.
According to reports from Greek authorities, the fire ignited in the Atavyros mountain area, a rugged part of western Rhodes located between rural villages. The blaze is primarily affecting low vegetation and grassland rather than dense forest, but officials warned that conditions remain dangerous due to dry weather and wind patterns that could accelerate spread.
Fire crews were deployed quickly to the scene, supported by volunteer teams and civil protection units. Ground forces have been actively working to establish containment lines while assessing terrain that is difficult to access in several areas. Aerial support, including water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, has also been requested to assist suppression efforts from above.
Authorities have emphasized that, although the fire is currently concentrated in a rural zone, its location and weather conditions make it potentially unpredictable. Emergency teams are prioritizing containment to prevent the fire from reaching nearby communities or agricultural land.
No evacuations have been widely reported at this stage, and there are no confirmed reports of injuries. Officials have not indicated any suspicion of criminal activity, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Local emergency services continue to monitor the situation closely, with firefighting operations expected to continue until the blaze is brought under control or significantly contained.
