A fast-moving wildfire near La Cresta in Riverside County prompted a major emergency response as crews moved quickly to protect nearby homes, close roads, and contain flames burning in the area of Via Volcano and Tenaja Road. While some online posts have referred to the incident as the โTenaja Fire,โ current reports identify the new-start blaze as the Volcano Fire.
The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near Via Volcano and Tenaja Road, west of Murrieta, and was reported at 0% containment during the early response. Firefighters responded with ground crews and air resources as the blaze raised immediate concerns for nearby structures in the rural La Cresta area.
Authorities closed roads near the fire zone, including areas around Tenaja Road, to keep the public away and allow emergency vehicles safe access. Road closures during wildfire responses are often necessary because smoke, shifting winds, downed power lines, and heavy firefighting equipment can create serious hazards for drivers and residents.
La Cresta is a rural community with rugged terrain, open vegetation, ranch properties, and homes spread across hillside areas, making firefighting conditions difficult when flames move quickly. Crews worked to slow the fireโs forward progress while monitoring wind conditions that could push flames toward nearby properties.
The name โTenaja Fireโ may cause confusion because the original Tenaja Fire was a separate 2019 wildfire that began near Tenaja Road and Clinton Keith Road in La Cresta. That fire burned nearly 2,000 acres, prompted evacuations, and damaged structures before it was contained.
As of the latest available reports, officials had not released a confirmed cause for the current Volcano Fire. Residents near La Cresta, Murrieta, and the Santa Rosa Plateau area are urged to monitor updates from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, follow evacuation instructions if issued, and avoid the fire area.
