On Sunday, July 5, 2026, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Rochester Police responded to two separate shooting incidents in downtown Rochester, New York, which collectively left seven people injured by gunfire and one person stabbed.
According to police, officers initially heard multiple gunshots coming from a parking lot on East Avenue, followed almost immediately by another round of gunfire near East Broad Street (E. Broad St.), prompting a large-scale emergency response as units flooded both locations.
At the East Broad Street scene, officers located three shooting victims and one stabbing victim. Authorities confirmed the victims ranged in age from 12 to 18 years old. At the East Avenue scene, police found four additional shooting victims, identified as ages 17, 17, 18, and 40. Officials stated that all injured individuals are expected to survive.
Investigators are currently determining whether the two incidents are connected, noting that more than 50 gunshots were fired from multiple weapons across both locations. Police described the situation as highly chaotic, with overlapping reports of gunfire occurring within a short timeframe.
During the immediate response, officers conducted traffic stops on two vehiclesโone on East Avenue and another on East Broad Street. Authorities recovered two loaded handguns from the East Avenue vehicle stop, leading to charges of criminal possession of a weapon against two male suspects. A flatbed tow truck later removed a black vehicle from the scene during the early morning hours.
At the East Broad Street stop, officers recovered a loaded handgun with an extended magazine, and a 17-year-old male suspect is also facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon.
Police stated that most of the victims appear to have been unintended targets, indicating the possibility of indiscriminate or chaotic gunfire during the incidents. During the response, witnesses also reported hearing and seeing fireworks in the area, which may have contributed to confusion during the unfolding situation.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including New York State Police, Monroe County Sheriffโs deputies, and Greece Police, who supported Rochester officers in securing the downtown area and assisting with the investigation.
Authorities have urged anyone with video footage or information to contact 911 or Crime Stoppers as detectives continue working to determine the full sequence of events and whether the two shootings are directly related.
