NORMAN, Okla. — July 5, 2026 | Updated: 4:00 a.m. CDT – Forecasters are closely monitoring severe weather conditions across central Oklahoma as thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes remain possible in parts of the state. Residents in Norman are being urged to stay weather-aware and monitor official alerts as conditions can change rapidly.
At this time, there are no verified reports of a tornado striking Norman today. No confirmed tornado touchdown has been reported in the city as of this update. However, the National Weather Service office in Norman continues to monitor severe weather across its forecast area and issues warnings when conditions warrant. (National Weather Service)
Norman and surrounding communities are no strangers to severe weather. Earlier in 2026, the National Weather Service confirmed several tornadoes across central Oklahoma, including an EF-0 tornado east of Norman and a stronger EF-2 tornado that tracked from southwest of Purcell into Cleveland County during a January severe weather event. The storms caused property damage but resulted in few reported injuries. (Wikipedia)
Meteorologists advise residents to remain prepared for rapidly changing weather, particularly during Oklahoma’s peak tornado season. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little warning, along with destructive straight-line winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and localized flash flooding. (National Weather Service)
Emergency management officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio, wireless emergency alerts, and trusted local media. Residents should identify a safe shelter location—preferably a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building—should a tornado warning be issued.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution during severe storms, as heavy rain and strong winds can create hazardous driving conditions. Officials also remind the public not to rely on unverified reports circulating on social media and instead follow updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
This remains a developing weather situation. Additional information will be released if tornado warnings are issued or if any confirmed tornadoes or storm damage are reported in Norman or elsewhere in central Oklahoma. (National Weather Service)
