A 24-year-old man was fatally shot near the Coney Island boardwalk Wednesday morning, prompting an active homicide investigation by the New York Police Department as detectives continue searching for the gunman. The shooting occurred just days before one of the busiest holiday weekends of the summer, drawing a significant police response in the popular beachfront neighborhood.
According to the NYPD, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:23 a.m. EDT on July 1 reporting a person shot near West 28th Street and Surf Avenue, about a block from the Riegelmann Boardwalk. Responding officers found 24-year-old Truron Roach-Martin suffering from gunshot wounds to the face and chest. EMS transported him to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the suspected gunman fled eastbound on West 28th Street toward Mermaid Avenue immediately after the shooting. Police described the suspect as a Black male wearing a blue face mask. As of the latest update, no arrests have been announced, and detectives have not identified a motive for the killing.
The victim, who performed under the stage name Briscoe Bands, was an emerging Brooklyn drill rapper and the father of a three-year-old daughter. Family members told local media they believe his growing music career may have made him a target, though investigators have not confirmed any motive or connection.
The homicide occurred within the confines of the NYPD’s 60th Precinct, which serves Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Sea Gate. Crime scene investigators remained at the intersection for several hours collecting shell casings, documenting evidence, and canvassing nearby businesses and residences for surveillance footage. Temporary street closures were implemented while detectives processed the scene.
The NYPD is asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has surveillance, cellphone, or dashcam footage from the area around West 28th Street and Surf Avenue at the time of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers. Information can be provided anonymously as investigators continue working to identify and locate the suspect.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are expected to release additional information as detectives pursue leads and review forensic evidence.
