The Iowa community is mourning after a tragic personal watercraft collision on Clear Lake that claimed the life of a 14-year-old girl from Dyersville, Iowa. The teenager died from injuries sustained in the July 4 crash, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The accident happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. near the boat ramp at MacIntosh Woods State Park in Cerro Gordo County. Authorities said two personal watercraft collided in the area known as Little Lake. Five people were involved in the crash, including four minors, and all were transported to MercyOne Medical Center in Mason City for medical treatment.
According to officials, the 14-year-old girl was riding as a passenger on one of the watercraft when the collision occurred. Despite emergency response efforts and medical care, she later died from injuries suffered in the accident. A 15-year-old girl from Mason City was also transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she remained in serious condition, while three other individuals were treated and released.
Emergency crews responded quickly after witnesses aboard a nearby pontoon boat assisted those involved before first responders arrived. Multiple agencies, including Iowa DNR conservation officers, the Iowa State Patrol, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Clear Lake Police Department, and local fire departments, assisted with the response.
The incident has brought grief to communities across Iowa as family members, friends, and residents reflect on the sudden loss of a young life. While social media reports have circulated naming the victim as Maya Cano, officials have not publicly released the teenager’s identity, and no verified source has confirmed that name.
The Iowa DNR continues investigating the cause of the collision. Authorities have stated that alcohol or other impairment factors have been ruled out as contributors, though the full circumstances leading to the crash remain under review.
As the investigation continues, those affected by the tragedy are left grieving a devastating loss that occurred during what was meant to be a holiday celebration. Any confirmed memorial information, obituary details, or statements from the family are expected to provide further insight into the life of the teenager remembered by loved ones.
The loss serves as a painful reminder of the importance of safety and caution during recreational activities on the water. For the family and friends of the young victim, the focus remains on honoring her memory and supporting one another through an unimaginable time of grief.
